The INCREASE Project
Setting up of Demo Project in Solar food drying along Horticulture value chains in Eastern, Southern, Central Province & North-western province.
1. Introduction
SNV implemented two 4-year projects targeting smallholder farmers, a biogas project, Energy for Agriculture (E4A); and a climate smart agricultural project, Sustainable Integrated Land Management Solutions (SILMS). SNV is now implementing a project inspired by concepts and lessons from SILMS and E4A projects, called INCREASE (Increasing Climate Resilience in Energy and Agricultural Systems and Entrepreneurship). The INCREASE project is funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). The project aims to contribute to resilience in farming and agribusiness by working with the targeted private companies, to encourage the smallholder farmers to adopt climate smart agricultural practices and deploy decentralised energy systems to increase and stabilise production. The project works with private sector companies in dairy, cotton, and horticulture. The focus is Southern, Lusaka, Central and Eastern Provinces.
OYE is another SNV project that aims to improve the livelihoods and increase incomes for thousands of out-of-school youths (among whom at least 50% are young women) in “green” jobs, Agri-food systems, and energy. The Project has a target of 10,000 and works in 4 provinces (Eastern, Southern, Central and Northern). The INCREASE project will be working with OYE to set up demo projects to demonstrate applications of solar energy for food drying.
Solar food driers are an intervention for value addition to the INCREASE value chains. Depending on the technological set up, Solar food driers can prolong shelf life and enhance the value of vegetables, fruits, and other Argo forestry products. Recognizing this value, SNV intends to pilot Solar food driers in Eastern, Southern, Lusaka and Central Province. Some of the applications proposed include.
I. Solar drying for fruits and vegetables
II. Solar drying for folder crops such as Leucaena
III. Solar drying for medicinal and ornamental agro-forestry trees such Moringa
Community based solar driers are preferred as they have the capacity to benefit many small holder farmers as opposed to individual ones. Therefore, they are easy to scale up depending on the local context for the area. If the pilot works, it can be scaled up in other areas.
